Aesthetic tooth restoration

The word “restoration” itself means restoration in Latin. The tooth is given an aesthetic anatomic shape and color, but its functions are preserved. This procedure allows you to correct the shape and size of the crown of the tooth, eliminate gaps between the teeth, correct the color of enamel and even achieve a Hollywood smile.

What is a restoration in dentistry

The main indications for aesthetic dental restorations are:

  • Tooth decay;
  • Hypoplasia (underdevelopment) of enamel;
  • Cracks and chipped enamel;
  • Curvature and other dental defects;
  • Dark enamel, the color of which cannot be corrected by bleaching or cleaning;
  • Gaps between the teeth;
  • The appearance of a border between the filling material and the tooth.

 

Aesthetic restoration with composite

The artistic method of restoration is the restoration of teeth with fillings. This method allows you to quickly and painlessly restore the aesthetic appearance of your smile. The tooth cavity is filled with a special filling material, which replaces the missing piece.

Restoration in this case is carried out in several stages:

  1. Tooth preparation. Before the aesthetic defects are corrected, the dentist prepares the oral cavity for the restoration. The dentist treats the teeth with polishing paste, selects a filling material, and treats all carious lesions, if necessary.
  2. Anesthesia. To make the procedure comfortable, the doctor injects the patient with anesthetic medication. As a rule, articaine and mepivacaine are used.
  3. Filling. A composite material is applied to the remaining surfaces of the teeth to restore their structure and shape. This material visually merges with the tooth due to its physical properties.

Composite fillings do not grind down the tissue of the opposing teeth when loaded. If part of the restoration breaks off, there is no need to rebuild the entire tooth; the lost part of the filling is repaired in about an hour.

The method of artistic (direct) restoration has some disadvantages. Composite fillings have a certain degree of shrinkage, so that sooner or later they will have to be adjusted or redone. In addition, composites darken over time under the influence of external factors, and it is very difficult to achieve a perfect long-term fit to the walls of the cavity.

 

Teeth restoration with veneers

If the patient’s teeth cannot be restored with a filling material, they are assigned to be restored with veneers, special overlays made of different types of ceramics, which make the teeth perfectly white and smooth and protect them from external influences.

The main advantages of veneers include:

  • Indistinguishability from your own teeth. The onlays are made while respecting the anatomic features of the enamel.
  • Resistance to external stimuli. Veneers perfectly withstand sudden changes in temperature and considerable stress. When wearing veneers, dark spots and turbidity do not appear on the teeth, even if the patient often consumes strong tea, coffee, wine and other colorful products.
  • High speed of restoration. The installation of veneers takes only a couple of appointments at the dentist, the patient does not need to wear complex structures for a long time to correct defects of the teeth.
  • Safety. For the placement of veneers, minimal grinding of the teeth is performed, which affects only the surface layer of enamel.
  • Aesthetics. Teeth with veneers become white and flawless in shape.

The placement of veneers is also recommended for uneven enamel color, tooth misalignment, increased enamel wear and chipped teeth. The process of their installation involves several steps:

  1. Grinding the tooth enamel. It is important that the teeth with veneers are not too thick.
  2. Making an impression. After the teeth are filed, the dentist takes impressions of the teeth so that the onlays look flawless, fit snugly to the teeth, and last as long as possible.
  3. Placement of veneers. After the veneers are created according to individual impressions, the plates (or caps) are placed on the teeth.

The average life span of veneers is 7-10 years, while lumineers (superfine fillings) last up to 20 years.
